How to Renew a Passport
US passport renewals are not always straightforward, so it’s a good idea to start the renewal process before your passport expires to avoid any lag time. In order to renew your US passport, you must meet specific eligibility requirements. These include the following:
• Your passport was issued after your 16th birthday
• Your passport was issued less than 15 years ago
• Your passport has not been lost, stolen, or damaged
• Your passport is not issued in a previous name, OR you have a legal document (such as a marriage license) to prove your identity and legal name change
If you meet all of the above requirements, then you can renew your passport. This includes renewing an expired passport, as long as it has been issued within the last 15 years.
If you do not meet one or more of the above requirements, then you cannot renew your passport. Instead, you will need to apply for a new passport.
Renew Your Passport Online
The easiest way to renew your passport is online, using a passport agency such as Signature Passports. Use our online registration form to tell us a little bit about yourself and your upcoming travel plans, then make your payment based on how quickly you would like your passport sent to you.
Once we have received your information and electronic payment, our friendly Passport Specialists will ask you to fill out relevant forms and submit them along with other materials. These additional materials include an updated passport photo, payment, your most recent passport, and, if your name has changed, a certified copy of either your court order or marriage certificate.
Once we have received all of the application materials, we will send them to the Department of State for procurement and processing. We guarantee that you will receive your application within the timeframe you selected and paid for, or else your services will be free.
When to Renew Your Passport
Ideally, you will apply to renew your passport about nine months before it is set to expire. This will give you ample time to submit your application and receive your new passport before it expires. Additionally, some countries require passports to remain valid for up to six months after travel. If you do not renew in enough time, you may be forced to alter your travel plans.
You can renew an expired passport as long as it has been issued to you within the last 15 years and you meet all the other passport renewal requirements.
