How to Get A Passport

Whether you have a business trip coming up or just want to be prepared when an opportunity arises to leave the country, you will need a passport to leave the United States. Here’s everything you need to know about how to apply for a U.S passport for yourself and your family.

Passport Card vs. Book

You have two options for getting a passport—a passport card and a traditional passport book. These can both be used as an alternative form of state-issued ID, and they have the same renewal requirements of being valid for 10 years for adults and five years for those 16 and younger.

The passport book allows you to re-enter the U.S. by any means, including air travel, from any country. The passport card only allows you to re-enter the U.S. a land or sea port-of-entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas.

You can apply for both a passport card and a passport book at the same time if you decide you want both.
