How Long Is A Passport Good for?

If you’re an American citizen who wants to travel outside of the country for any reason, whether for business or pleasure, you will need to have a valid American passport to enter a foreign country and to return to the United States when your trip is over.

Some countries have strict requirements about how long your passport has to be valid in order for you to enter the country. Many European and Asian countries require American passports to be valid for at least six months beyond your travel date.

If your passport is close to its expiration date, then you may want to renew it to make sure your travel plans go as planned. This is especially important if you may end up with an extended stay in another country.

How Long Does a Passport Last?

American passports for adults (age 16 or older) last for 10 years. This rule only applies if you received your passport when you were at least 16 years old. If you were under 16 or have gotten a passport for a child who was under the age of 16 at the time of application, then that passport is only valid for five years.

To find out whether or not your passport is expired, all you need to do is open your passport book or inspect your passport card and look for the issue date.

On a passport book, you can find the issue date on the data page located at the front of your passport book. (This is the same page that has your picture and personal details.)

On a passport card, you can find the issue date on the front of the passport card.

How to Renew an Expired Passport

If it turns out that your passport has expired or is close to expiring, you have options. If the passport was issued within the last 15 years and you were at least 16 years old when you applied for it, you may be eligible for passport renewal.

If your passport expired more than 15 years ago or if you were under the age of 16 when you applied for it, then you will have to apply for a new passport.
